What it is

Counting Is the Easy Half of an Electrical Estimate

Electrical drawings show you what to count and almost nothing about what to buy. A lighting plan tells you there are 214 fixtures of six types. It does not tell you how much wire connects them, how the homeruns route, how far a drop falls from the deck to a device, or how much conduit gets bent around a duct that is not on your sheet. That gap between what is drawn and what is installed is where electrical estimates go wrong, and no amount of measuring precision closes it — only stated assumptions do.

The result is an estimate a reviewer can interrogate. If your number is 12% above the next bid, the conversation is about whether 214 fixtures is right, whether the drop allowance was 12 feet or 18, and whether the other bidder priced the feeder as aluminium — rather than about two totals that share no visible structure.
